How to prevent wood shelving from being damaged in wet kitchen environments?

To prevent the damage of wooden shelves in the humid environment of the kitchen, you can start from many aspects such as installation location selection, moisture-proof treatment, daily use and maintenance:

Select a proper installation position
Try to install the wooden shelf away from the sink, stove and other easy to produce water vapor places. For example, if the sink is on the window side of the kitchen, install the shelf on the other side of the relatively dry wall. At the same time, avoid installing in the corner of the kitchen, where the air circulation is poor and the water vapor is easy to accumulate. If the kitchen has a window, choose a window and well-ventilated location to install, so that the air can naturally circulate away water vapor, reduce the humidity around the shelf.

moisture-proof
Apply moisture-proof paint or water-proof agent: Before using the shelf, clean its surface to remove impurities such as dust, and then evenly apply moisture-proof paint or water-proof agent. Moisture-proof paint and water-repellent agent can form a protective film on the surface of the wood to prevent water vapor from entering the interior of the wood. It is generally repainted every 3-6 months according to the use.
Use a moisture mat or tinfoil: Line each shelf with a moisture mat or tinfoil. The moisture cushion has good water absorption and moisture resistance, and the tin foil can reflect water vapor to reduce the contact between wood and water vapor. For example, the anti-moisture mat on the shelf where the tableware is placed can effectively absorb the residual moisture on the tableware.
Control kitchen humidity
Use a dehumidifier: Install a dehumidifier in the kitchen, especially in the humid season or humid areas in the south, and turn on the dehumidifier regularly to reduce the humidity in the kitchen. Generally open 2-3 hours a day to keep the air dry. Humidity controllers can also be installed to automatically monitor and adjust kitchen humidity.
Strengthen ventilation: Open the range hood when cooking to discharge the water vapor generated by cooking in time. Usually, you should often open the kitchen doors and Windows to ventilate, or use exhaust fans to let fresh dry air into the kitchen and replace wet air. Ventilate at least 2-3 times a day for about 30 minutes each time.
Pay attention to daily use and maintenance
Avoid water accumulation: Items placed on the shelf should be drained as much as possible before placing. If there are items with water on the shelf, clean up the water in time to prevent water from penetrating into the wood. For example, after washing the tableware, dry it with a dry cloth before putting it in the storage rack.
Regular cleaning and maintenance: Wipe the wooden shelf with a dry cloth regularly to remove dust and stains on the surface. Maintain the shelf at regular intervals (such as one month) with a special wood maintenance oil to nourish the wood and enhance its moisture resistance. During maintenance, apply the maintenance oil evenly on the shelf surface and wipe with a soft cloth until absorbed.
